초록 : South Korea confronts a trifecta of extreme demographic challenges: lowest-low fertility, super-aging, and extreme population concentration in the Seoul metropolitan area. These interconnected issues pose serious threats to the nation's resilience and long-term sustainability. Lowest-low fertility rates have led to school closures and the shuttering of obstetrics and pediatrics facilities, creating a vicious cycle that further discourages childbearing. This demographic decline is coupled with a rapidly aging population, resulting in a growing demand for healthcare services and a shrinking pool of caregivers. The strain on the healthcare system is already evident in the emerging shortage of blood for medical use. Furthermore, the extreme concentration of the population in the Seoul metropolitan area has reached a tipping point, making it virtually impossible to reverse the trend. Efforts to improve accessibility to rural areas, such as expanding transportation networks, may inadvertently exacerbate migration towards the capital. Adding to these challenges, East Asia is experiencing climate change at a faster rate than the global average, further complicating South Korea's situation. The combination of demographic imbalances and escalating climate risks necessitates urgent and comprehensive policy interventions to mitigate these converging threats and ensure a sustainable future for the nation.
